WLUR Announces Winter 2013 Open Air Waves Winners

Shester, Hayburst and The Filibusters receive the evening's top honors

Blake Shester was chosen as the grand prize winner at the winter edition of Open Air Waves, WLUR's twice-annual live-broadcast open mic night, on Thursday, March 14, in the Elrod Commons living room.

Shester, who played the banjo, won the evening's top honor after being selected as the first-place finisher in the Solo Music category. He and Burr Datz, who joined Shester on acoustic guitar, also finished in a tie for second place in Group Music.

The Filibusters, a string band comprised of Washington and Lee students Marino Orlandi '15, Kane Thomas '14, Carter Malmo '13 and Brian Ross '13, took first place in Group Music. James Leva and Vivian Leva tied with Shester and Datz for the second-place slot.

W&L first-year Libby Hayhurst was selected as the first-place finisher in Spoken Word for the second straight time, having won the category at the fall Open Air Waves.

Sara-Jane McDonald, a past grand prize winner, placed second in Solo Music.
