Meaningful to Help Others

Susan and Littleton W. Roberts ’53

from The Bridge: Fall/Winter 2011 issue

Susan and Littleton W. Roberts ’53Though Littleton W. Roberts Jr. '53 graduated from W&L more than 50 years ago, his affection for and connection to the University remain as strong as ever. In gratitude for W&L's lasting impact on his personal and professional successes, Roberts and his wife, Susan, recently provided in their wills a gift of more than $1 million to establish the Littleton Waller Roberts Jr. and Susan Fleming Roberts Scholarship. They hope their gift will help the University continue its tradition of excellence and be positioned to attract the finest students.

"It's very meaningful for us to help others," says Roberts, a retired lawyer in suburban Philadelphia. "Since we have no children, Washington and Lee is an object of our bounty. We know no more worthy recipient than W&L."

Susan, who graduated from Bucknell University, has also built strong ties with W&L over the years. The couple has attended many Alumni College summer courses on campus and taken trips with W&L Traveller.

"Through this gift, we hope a few additional young people will be able to go to W&L and enjoy it the way we did," they say.
