For Rick Marshall '61, that memorable and inspirational professor was John McKenzie Gunn '45, the Lewis Whitaker Adams Professor of Economics Emeritus.

"Professor Gunn stimulated my lifelong interest in economics," says Marshall, who is president of One Management and Frederick Investment Corp., both based in Raleigh, N.C. "It was basically his own interest in economics that inspired me."

Marshall recently gave $100,000 for the George Frederick Marshall Endowment. The funds will support new course development, curriculum innovation, professional development and faculty research in the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics. He envisions the gift supporting diverse educational experiences at W&L to prepare students for leadership in their professions and within their communities.

"In giving money, I wanted to do something that would have a tangible benefit," Marshall says. "Hopefully this will mean a broadening of the academic experience at W&L."
