In June 2011 Professor Lisa Greer and students Will Sullivan'14, Matt Benson'12, and WLU alum Al Curran'62 (and professor emeritus at Smith College) traveled to Ambergris Caye, Belize to document an exceptional coral reef dominated by the now rare and endangered coral species Acropora cervicornis. This coral was once common on Caribbean reefs before it experienced a dramatic decline in the 1980's. A. cervicornis is an important coral reef framework builder and is found in large numbers in fossil reef outcrops throughout the Pleistocene and Holocene time periods. The purpose of this project is to document the abundance, extent, health, and geochemical composition of this rare modern accumulation of A. cervicornis off Belize. We did manage to sneak in a recreational dive or two as well!
