A Sense of Community

Shelly and Tom Millhiser '81L, P'11L

from The Bridge: Spring/Summer 2011 issue

Shelly and Tom MillhiserShelly and Tom Millhiser established the Rochelle and Thomas McN. Millhiser '81 L Professor of Practice to support the Law School's third-year program in the area of estate and individual tax planning. "I'm a proponent of the third-year program," says Tom Millhiser, father of Neil Millhiser '11L. "So many students come out of law school without any practical experience.

"It is an innovative program among all the law schools in the country," continues Millhiser. "Washington and Lee is the only top law school implementing this. The program will simulate the real practice of law and allow students to work with practicing attorneys." Millhiser's own firm, Hunton & Williams L.L.P., in Richmond, will participate in the program.

Millhiser hopes his gift of $500,000 will inspire other alumni to donate as well. "I want to repay a debt. Tuition does not cover the full cost of the education we received. I want to say thank you for the outstanding legal education that both I and my son received. W&L Law is unique in the nation. There is such a strong sense of community, combined with friendly competition."
