Alumnus and Wife Leave Estate Gift Supporting Faculty

from The Bridge: Fall 2009 issue

Dr. John T. Herwick '36, and his wife, Mary, spent years planning a major estate gift to W&L. They took care to support faculty in the sciences, which were of great interest to Herwick.
He majored in biology here and earned a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Herwick served as a captain in the United States Army during World War II and practiced medicine in Dearborn, Mich.

Herwick remained fond of W&L, and in his later years borrowed books and biology teaching slides from W&L, which served as pleasant reminders of his W&L courses decades earlier. Herwick died in 2007, preceded by his wife. The Herwicks' estate gift has funded the John T. Herwick Professorship in Biology and the John T. Herwick M.D. Professorship in Chemistry, and will eventually fund a scholarship.
