Widow Carries on Husband's Philanthropy

from The Bridge: Fall 2009 issue

"I really wanted to do this for Harry," said Mary Jayne Redenbaugh, widow of Harry Redenbaugh '39. The gift wasn't Redenbaugh's first to W&L. During her husband's lifetime, the couple made substantial planned gifts through two unitrusts, which continue to provide retirement income for her. In 2007 Redenbaugh made an outright gift endowing the Redenbaugh Term Professorship.

The gift helped W&L meet the Lenfest Challenge. It also brought the Redenbaughs' total philanthropy to W&L to more than $1 million. In honor of this milestone, W&L has added their names to its Honored Benefactors Wall in Washington Hall. "I'm pleased that Harry's name will always be there," said Redenbaugh. "He wasn't one to seek recognition, but I think being listed on the wall would have made him proud."
