Give Like a General

In 1796 George Washington donated $20,000 worth of James River Canal stock to Liberty Hall Academy. At the time it was the largest gift ever made to support higher education. Liberty Hall was so named as a show of support for the revolutionary movement. It was only natural, then, to rename the academy for the independent nation's first leader and the institution's greatest benefactor. General Washington wrote this letter to the Board of Trustees upon learning of the honor:
