Mike Walsh has a long and accomplished career at Washington and Lee spanning athletics and fundraising. Since 2006 Mike has served as Special Assistant to the Vice President of University Advancement, working as a major gift officer in the northeast region while also overseeing capital gifts for athletics. In this capacity Mike raises funds and major gifts in support of Washington and Lee's highest priorities, including scholarship aid for students, the Lenfest Challenge for Faculty Support, and the restoration and renovation of the historic Colonnade.
Mike served the University as Chair of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics from1989 to 2006. In 2002, Mike was promoted to Executive Director and Chair of the department, assuming additional fundraising duties related to athletics. Mike played a key role in establishing the Richard L. Duchossois Athletic Complex, which includes all of the University's athletic facilities.
Major athletics improvements and additions that Mike facilitated over the course of his career include the renovation of Wilson Field, the renovation of the wrestling room, three new glass squash courts, the Duchossois Tennis Center, the Cap'n Dick Smith Baseball Field, the Fechnay Family Ropes Challenge Course, the Alston Parker Watt Soccer and Lacrosse Field, The Fuge Family Football and Lacrosse Practice Fields, the lighted Turf Field, the Alumni Practice Field, the redesigned Dick Miller Cross-country Trail, and the construction of the 10,000 square foot Fitness Center and Dance Studio.
In October 2010, Mike's service to the University and accomplishments in athletics and fundraising were recognized with a $1 million endowment gift from a former member of W&L's Board of Trustees. Through the gift, establishing an endowment for athletic leadership, the athletic director's position at W&L was named the Michael F. Walsh Athletic Directorship.
