In May 2004, Atkins joined the Development Staff after 27 years at Washington and Lee University as associate alumni director, associate dean of students, and acting director in its opening year of the John W. Elrod University Commons. He has worked with countless alumni and students on a wide variety of projects and activities over the years which have served to enhance the quality of student life and the appearance of the historic campus.
In addition to planning and maintaining the University's donor relations program, Atkins also provides assistance and direction for special fund raising projects. In addition he serves as staff liaison for The Washington Society, a volunteer corps comprised of past trustees, alumni board directors and law council members.
Atkins attended W&L as a Baker Scholar, one of the University's earliest merit scholarships, from Raleigh, N.C. He majored in Contemporary Civilization and German, while playing football and lacrosse and serving in several student service organizations. Following OCS and 3 years of service in the Navy and 6 years at Virginia Episcopal School, where he was a teacher, coach, and athletic director, Atkins and his wife Evan with their two children moved to Lexington in 1977. Both children are now W&L alums, Drewry '93 and Cole '97.
