Applying for Need Based Aid

FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID 

Eligibility for any federally funded need-based grant, federal student and/or parent loan, or federal work study requires the submission of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid.) FAFSA applications should be submitted by June 1, 2014 to ensure adequate time to process federal aid. You are not required to submit the institutional need-based application to receive federal aid. If you wish to be considered for institutional need-based grant, you will need to submit the institutional need-based application.

INSTITUTIONAL NEED-BASED GRANT

The application for instiutionally funded need-based grant (and the W&L Promise) consists of 4 steps and is broken into an Initial Application and a Final Application. The Initial Application must be submitted by the relevant Financial Aid Application deadline if you wish to be considered for institutionally funded need-based grant or the W&L Promise. The Final Application should be completed before June 1, 2014 and only after you have submitted your 2013 federal tax returns to the IRS.

The security of your sensitive materials is important at W&L.  Email attachments can be compromised.  Due to security and privacy concerns, we do not accept sensitive documents submitted via fax or email. Please submit your tax returns and other documents using our electronic upload process. You may also mail your documents directly to our office at W&L Financial Aid Office, 204 West Washington Street, Lexington, VA 24450.

INITIAL INSTITUTIONAL NEED-BASED GRANT APPLICATION

STEP 1:  Complete the 2014-15 CSS Profile online. 

  • Our school code is 5887
  • The Non-Custodial Parent Profile is required if your parents are divorced, separated, or unmarried.

STEP 2:  Submit directly to the W&L Financial Aid Office via electronic upload or mail:

  • Your and your parents' 2012 federal tax returns including all schedules, W-2s, 1099s, etc
  • 2012 Federal tax returns for businesses and corporations including all schedules, K-1s,etc, if applicable
  • If your parents are divorced, separated, or unmarried, your non-custodial parent's tax return is also required.

FINAL INSTITUTIONAL NEED-BASED GRANT APPLICATION

STEP 3:  Submit directly to the W&L Financial Aid Office via electronic upload or mail:

  • Your and your parents' 2013 federal tax returns including all schedules, W-2s, 1099s, etc
  • 2013 Federal tax returns for businesses and corporations including all schedules, K-1s,etc, if applicable
  • If your parents are divorced, separated, or unmarried, your non-custodial parent's tax return is also required.

STEP 4:  Complete the 2014-15 FAFSA online using the 2013 federal tax returns.  Our school code is 003768.


Additional Information:

  • All admitted applicants who submit the FAFSA will receive an award letter indicating their eligibility for federal financial aid awards.
  • Steps 1 and 2 are required for an applicant to be reviewed for institutional grant eligibility. If an applicant is eligible for institutional need-based grant that estimated grant will be included on the preliminary financial aid award letter. Your institutional need-based grant will be adjusted to reflect the 2013 tax information. This means your institutional aid could increase or decrease based on the 2013 taxes.
  • Steps 3 and 4 should be completed after the 2013 federal tax returns are available. Please do not submit draft copies of tax returns to our office.  Do not submit your FAFSA with estimated tax figures.
  • If your 2013 federal tax returns are available by the financial aid deadline, please submit the 2013 returns along with the 2012 returns. Families who submit their 2013 taxes by the deadline will receive a complete financial aid award.
  • Your 2013 tax returns are not ready?  Do not wait to apply for financial assistance until the 2013 tax returns are complete. Please notify our office at 540-458-8717 if submission deadlines present a problem.
  • Special Circumstances?  You are welcome to notify our office in writing of any special or unusual circumstances beyond the family's control which will limit your ability to afford educational costs. 
  • We do not accept documents submitted via fax or email.  Please mail your documents to our office at W&L Financial Aid Office, 204 West Washington Street, Lexington, VA 24450.  You can also submit documents via electronic upload.
