The Department of Art and Art History educates students about the history of art and contemporary visual culture, and about the material and conceptual practices of the studio. We seek to instill a visual literacy that empowers students with the words, concepts, and methods of analysis to evaluate critically the art of the past and present, as well as their own work. We achieve this mission by teaching factual information and basic techniques, but also by examining concepts and critical methods of analysis.
