Theater and dance are essential forms of human expression that celebrate creative collaboration and critical engagement with our world. In support of the University's liberal arts mission, the Theater Department provides a dynamic introduction to performance, production, history and literature. Through the study of the history and practice of theater and dance, students develop aesthetic appreciation for art and culture, learn flexible problem solving methods, acquire diverse communication skills and employ creative collaborative processes. These academic and artistic tools and experiences will lead students to contribute their unique talent and training to the betterment of society and the arts.

Program Highlights

  • The fully equipped Lenfest Hall is the department's home. We produce a season of theatrical events drawn from a wide range of periods and styles that engage students in all areas of the performing arts.
  • Our performance season includes elaborately presented main stage plays and musicals, dance concerts, a playwright festival, a series of student-directed one act plays and a variety of student-generated workshop productions.
  • Each year we invite a number of distinguished guest actors, directors, playwrights, choreographers, dancers, designers, or theater scholars to share their expertise with students.
  • Students intending to major in theater, as well as interested non-majors, are equally welcome to participate in the theater and dance programs at Washington and Lee.
