The Halle Foundation has given Washington and Lee $52,618 to increase the number and diversity of students taking language immersion in Germany--and to add a third location, Bonn.
The grant provides financial assistance to a total of 12 students over two years to study at W&L partner universities and stay with host families. The experience is offered during the abbreviated, intensive Spring Term in W&L's distinctive three-term academic calendar. The students gain valuable exposure to culture, history and contemporary issues in addition to getting to know Germans and improving their ability to speak German.
The grant also funds the development of the Bonn site, which joins the other two, in Bayreuth and Eichstatt.
Over just the past several years, half a dozen W&L graduating students who majored in German have won prestigious Fulbright grants to teach or do research in Germany.
Based in Atlanta, The Halle Foundation supports new and innovative projects that further its mission of promoting knowledge and friendship between the people of Germany and those of the United States.
