Clarence Thomas Speaks in Lee Chapel

Addressing a capacity crowd in Washington and Lee University's Lee Chapel on Monday (March 16), Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said there is to little emphasis on responsibility, sacrifice and self-denial on the part of Americans.

Recalling President John F. Kennedy's call to service in 1960, Thomas said that today the message seems to be: "Ask not what you can do for yourselves or your country, but what your country must do for you,'"

In addition to his 35 minutes of prepared remarks, Thomas took questions from the audience for another 35 minutes.

Thomas's appearance at W&L was sponsored by the Contact committee, a student-run speakers' program.
