The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) announced its College Division All-State Women's Soccer Team on Tuesday afternoon and Washington and Lee had three student-athletes honored.
Senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) was named to the 11-player first team, while senior defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and junior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) were tabbed to the second team.
Van Devender earned first team all-state laurels for the third-straight year after finishing fourth in the ODAC in scoring during the 2008 season with 45 points on 17 goals and 11 assists. The 2007 ODAC and Virginia College Division Player of the Year, Van Devender finished her career ranked second all-time at W&L in career goals (64), career assists (33) and career points (161). She was a three-time First Team All-ODAC honoree and the first two-time All-American in program history.
Van Brunt garnered second team all-state honors after receiving first team recognition a season ago. A 2008 First Team All-ODAC selection, Van Brunt started all 18 games this fall and contributed five points on one goal and three assists. She completed her career with 25 points on eight goals and nine assists. She also had a major impact on a defensive unit that allowed just 41 goals over 80 games during her four seasons.
Sutherland, the 2006 VaSID Rookie of the Year and a 2008 First Team All-ODAC selection, started 15-of-18 games this season and notched nine points on four goals and one assist.
Washington and Lee finished the 2008 campaign with a 13-5 overall record and a 9-2 mark in the ODAC. The Generals advanced to the ODAC Tournament Semifinals before falling to third-ranked Lynchburg College, 1-0.
