The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) announced its College Division All-State Field Hockey team on Monday afternoon and Washington and Lee had three student-athletes honored.
Junior forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) and sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) were both named to the 11-player first team, while senior defender Liz Garson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) was tabbed to the second team.
Armstrong garnered first team accolades for the second-straight year after nothing second team laurels as a first-year. A 2008 First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-South Region honoree, Armstrong led the Generals in scoring this season with 37 points on 17 goals and three assists. Her 17 goals are the second-highest season total at W&L and her 37 points rank as the third-most prolific season in school history. Armstong will enter her senior campaign with 39 career goals and 93 career points and needs just four goals and 14 points to become W&L's all-time leader in both categories. Mathews received first team accolades after notching second team honors a season ago.
Also a 2008 First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-South Region honoree, Mathews started all 19 contests for the Generals and led the Blue and White with eight assists, while finishing third in scoring with 12 points. Her eight assists are tied for the third-most in a season at W&L.
Garson was named to the second team after notching first team all-state honors a season ago. A First Team All-ODAC selection in 2008, she started all 19 games and tallied eight points on three goals and two assists. She also helped the defense allow an average of just 1.89 goals per game.
The W&L field hockey team finished the 2008 season at 10-9 overall and 5-2 in league play. The Generals advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament before falling to Eastern Mennonite, 6-0.
