The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2008 preseason coaches poll for men's soccer on Wednesday afternoon and Washington and Lee was picked to finish fifth out of the league's 11 teams.
Virginia Wesleyan topped the poll with five first-place votes and 112 points. Roanoke (106 points) and Hampden-Syndey (101 points) each had three first-place votes. Lynchburg accumulated 87 points, while W&L totaled 86 points. Randolph-Macon (61), Eastern Mennonite (54), Guilford (48), Randolph (27), Bridgewater (25) and Emory & Henry (19) rounded out the poll.
W&L finished the regular season with a 12-3-3 overall record and a 6-1-2 ODAC mark and returns a host of letterwinners for the 2008 campaign, including junior All-ODAC selections Fletcher McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) and Tommy Pignatelli (Chatham, N.J./Chatham).
McCraw was a second team all-conference and second team all-state selection in 2007 after starting all 18 games as a member of the W&L defense that allowed an average of just 0.53 goals per game. Pignatelli was an Honorable Mention All-ODAC selection and finished third on the team in scoring with 11 points (2g, 7a).
The Generals open the 2008 campaign on Sat., Sept. 6 when they take on Shenandoah at 4:00 pm at Watt Field.
