The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced on Thursday morning that Washington and Lee University is the recipient of the league's Wooldridge Overall Sports Champion Cup as the top athletic program in the conference during the 2007-08 school year. Additionally, the Generals claimed the men's overall cup and the women's overall cup for having the top men's athletic program and women's athletic program in the 13-team conference.
The Wooldridge Champions Cup is sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance and is based on regular-season standings in team sports and championship team finishes in individual sports.
Washington and Lee has won the overall cup 12 times in the 14 years since its inception in 1994-95. The Generals have claimed the men's cup 13 times and have received the women's cup eight times.
W&L racked up a record 150.5 overall points and claimed eight ODAC championships during the 2007-08 school year. The Generals finished 34 points ahead of Roanoke College, while Virginia Wesleyan finished third overall with 112.0 points. W&L had 69.0 points in the men's competition to finish 19.5 points ahead of second-place Lynchburg (49.5) and 81.5 points in the women's competition to finish 11 points better than second-place Roanoke (70.5).
Washington and Lee completed the 2007-08 school year with a 199-91-3 (.684) overall record and won conference championships in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's tennis, golf, women's swimming, women's lacrosse and volleyball.
