Needs and priorities change over time, and employees should be prepared to acquire new skills to remain competitive and successful in their current position.
The University offers on-campus classes and seminars throughout the year on a variety of topics including, but not limited to, supervisory skills, communication, retirement planning, computer classes, wellness activities and University policies. Staff are invited to register for these classes, which are advertised as they are developed. For professional development classes held during work hours, please discuss with your supervisor before registering.
Washington and Lee University has established a fund to provide administration and staff with assistance to attend off-campus conferences, workshops, seminars or courses that enhance individual skills. A request form can be obtained by clicking here. For more information about the Employee Development Fund, call the Assistant Director for Workforce Development in the Office of Human Resources at extension 8252.
The Human Resources Office Library has a wide variety of books, DVDs, and audio resources available for supervisors and staff to borrow. In the office library you will find titles covering management skills, oral and written communication (public speaking, grammar and writing), employee relations, organization and time management. Educational Assistance Within and Outside the University
Washington and Lee University's Professional Development Program provides tuition assistance to full-time employees seeking to obtain a college-level degree, attend educational courses not leading to a degree, or obtain a work-related certification or license. Requests may be funded fully or partially for courses that will benefit the employee at his/her current position, improve job skills, or position the employee for advancement opportunities at the University. University funds should not be used to support course work that is not job-related. Conference registrations are normally funded from departmental budgets and are not eligible for funding through this program. Additional information is located at http://www.wlu.edu/x11399.xml.
Educational Assistance at Washington and Lee
With the approval of the faculty member and the employee's supervisor, employees may audit courses at the University. There is no charge for this privilege, but employees are expected to make up lost work time.
Full-time employees who are enrolled in a course or courses that neither lead to a degree nor lead to their status as a full-time student, are eligible to enroll in such courses for credit with the instructor's permission at the rate of 25% of the per-credit hour cost as established by the University. Employees should note that some portion of this tuition remission for their own courses may be taxable.
